  1. (1)DISK INSTALLATION
  2.  
  3. This diskette contains files that accompany the 
  4. Osborne/McGraw-Hill book:
  5.  
  6.     Sound Blaster: The Official Book (2nd Edition)
  7.  
  8. You need about 3.5MB (three and one-half million bytes) of 
  9. available space on your hard drive to install all of the software 
  10. from the diskette that accompanies this book. The installation 
  11. process creates a directory called \SBBOOK. It then decompresses 
  12. files on the diskette and copies them to subdirectories under 
  13. \SBBOOK. If you cannot perform the full installation, see the 
  14. "Partial Installation" section for details on how to select 
  15. individual programs to install. The installation process also 
  16. copies all the files for Chapter 14, "Programming the Sound 
  17. Blaster Family," to your hard disk.
  18.  
  19.     NOTE: The installation procedure does not change 
  20.     your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS file, so you needn't 
  21.     be concerned about making backup copies of these before 
  22.     you begin the installation of the diskette. The final 
  23.     installation of the Windows programs will, under your 
  24.     control, create program icons in your Sound Blaster 
  25.     program group. If you like, you can create a Sound 
  26.     Blaster Book program group for these programs. For 
  27.     more background on how to do this, please consult 
  28.     your Microsoft Windows User's Guide.

  30. (2)Full Installation
  31.  
  32. To install all the programs, place the diskette into your A: 
  33. (or B:) floppy drive. Switch the DOS prompt for that drive by 
  34. typing A: (or B:) and press ENTER. 
  35.  
  36.     NOTE: If you're in Microsoft Windows, go to the Program 
  37.     Manager and select Exit from the File menu to return to 
  38.     DOS.
  39.  
  40. Now run the INSTALL batch file on the diskette, selecting one of 
  41. the following two options:
  42.  
  43.     To install to hard drive C:, type INSTALL C: 
  44.         and then press ENTER.
  45.  
  46.     To install to hard drive D:, type INSTALL D: 
  47.         and then press ENTER.
  48.  
  49.     NOTE: You must include the colon (:) after the 
  50.     drive letter.
  51.  
  52. After the installation starts, you'll be prompted several times 
  53. to press any key to continue.
  54.  
  55.     NOTE: You can prematurely terminate the installation 
  56.     process by pressing Ctrl-C (hold down the Ctrl key and 
  57.     press C). Then     press Y to confirm that you wish to 
  58.     terminate the batch (installation) file. If you run 
  59.     only DOS on your machine, then once the installation 
  60.     batch file finishes, you're done with the installation. 
  61.     If you run Microsoft Windows, your next step is to 
  62.     finish the installation of the Windows programs on the 
  63.     diskette. The INSTALL batch file displays information 
  64.     on your screen that tells you how to perform the Windows 
  65.     part of the installation. This information can be 
  66.     captured to your printer by doing a Print Screen, however
  67.     for your convenience this information is duplicated in 
  68.     the sections that follow.

  70. (3)Creating a Program Group
  71.  
  72. You're likely to add program icons for the Windows programs to 
  73. your Sound Blaster program group, but if you wish to create a 
  74. program group for the programs in this book, follow these 
  75. instructions. From your Microsoft Windows Program Manager 
  76. follow these steps:
  77.     1. Select New from the File menu.
  78.     2. Select Program Group, and then click OK.
  79.     3. Type Sound Blaster Book in the Description field.
  80.     4. Click OK.

  82. (3)Creating Program Icons
  83.  
  84. Select the program group (probably your Sound Blaster program 
  85. group but maybe a new Sound Blaster Book group) that'll be the 
  86. home for the Windows programs that accompany 
  87. Sound Blaster: The Official Book. From your Windows Program 
  88. Manager, make certain that this program group is the currently 
  89. selected one, the one that has the highlighted window title. 
  90. From this program group, create program items for each of the 
  91. files listed below, following these steps:
  92.     1. Select New from the File menu.
  93.     2. Click OK (program item is already selected).
  94.     3. Select Browse. (If you don't see the Browse button, 
  95.     you're in the File Manager.)
  96.     4. Navigate to each filename below, double-click them, 
  97.     then click OK:
  98.         \SBBOOK\GOLDWAVE\GOLDWAVE.EXE
  99.         \SBBOOK\VADEMO\V_ASSIST.EXE

  101. (2)Partial Installation
  102.  
  103. You can install the software onto the hard disk without running 
  104. the installation program. A partial installation is necessary 
  105. if any of the following situations apply to you:
  106.  
  107. >>    You lack 3.5MB available space on your hard drive.
  108.  
  109. >>    You wish to copy the files to a directory other 
  110.     than \SBBOOK.
  111.  
  112. >>    You already have a directory called \SBBOOK (the 
  113.     INSTALL batch file does not copy files to the directory 
  114.     \SBBOOK if it already exists).
  115.  
  116. The file FILELIST.TXT on the diskette lists the software provided
  117. with the name of the self-extracting file that contains each 
  118. program. Suppose you want to make a fresh copy of the VoiceAssist
  119. demonstration program. It's provided in the self-extracting file 
  120. VADEMO.EXE. Create a directory on your hard drive (if one doesn't 
  121. already exist for these files). Switch to that directory and then 
  122. run VADEMO.EXE. VADEMO.EXE then copies the files to your directory
  123. on the hard drive.

  125. Let's say you've put the diskette into the A: drive, and you wish 
  126. to copy the files in VADEMO.EXE to a directory called \VADEMO that
  127. you've just created on your C: drive. Follow these instructions:
  128.     1.    Type C: and then press ENTER.
  129.     2.    Type CD\VADEMO and then press ENTER.
  130.     3.    Type A:VADEMO.EXE and then press ENTER.

  132.     NOTE: Refer to your DOS manual for more assistance with 
  133.     creating directories or moving into and out of them.
